Lou. A. SAYERS

Appointed Life Member on the 17 May 1958.

How does one tell the story of this man who has done so much for the Club. He first came onto the Council of the Club in 1927 and during the next 21 years was a member on and off the Council.

Although Lou was never President of the Club, he held all the other office bearer’s positions with class, mainly as Secretary and Treasurer, 1929 & 1933, Captain 1936 & 1938.

Lou Sayers, like so many of the members was also associated with the Benalla Lawn Tennis Club where he was also a Life Member for it was the same party of men that played both sports and made them so great in Benalla.

Mr Sayers had a happy way with people and a particularly good P.R. man if things were not going correctly, he would show guidance, but in a respectful manner.

Lou Sayers knew the Club was not very financial when the Club purchased the land the Club is located on. The Committee desired the appointment of a course designer, but Lou with his  knowledge, designed this course, firstly by himself, then the Planning Committee of Clem Perrin, George Oliver and Clarrie Goyne. Mr Harold Archer reviewed the layout and was impressed.

Years later a golf course designer further reviewed the course and remarked as to how good it was, so Lou saved the Club considerable pounds, shillings and pence by designing the course free of costs for the benefits of present and future golfers.

Mr L.A. Sayers was a great man and a particularly good administrator indeed.
