Norman W. STEPHENS

Appointed Life Member on the 10 November 1993.

Norm Stephens first came to the Committee in 1950 when Doc McCardel was in his first year as President. He remained on Committee until 1953 when he was on or off at different times.

Norm was Junior Vice President 1961 becoming Captain in 1963 through 1964. Senior Vice President 1988 through 1989. Becoming Club Champion on 7 occasions.

In his younger days, Norm played football for Benalla in the Ovens & Murray League as well as tennis.

As for golf, he started playing on the Casey Island course which required a very straight shot given the course layout available. Casey Island was a very challenging but also a picturesque course to rival many other courses in Victoria according to many players at the time.

Norm played on the new course on Opening Day in 1949 in a mixed foursome event with his sister, Pat. During his career, he was a scratch handicap player and remained in ‘single’ figures during his golfing career.

He was a pennant player for Benalla and a Country Week player for the district, along with other Benalla players.

Norm came out of retirement in 1985 for the Committee and was President in 1990 through 1992. It was fitting that Norm was President for the opening of the new Clubhouse on the 26 October 1990.
